Detox cleanses
Priority Matrix
The numbers.
Four dimensions, scored 1–6, where six is always the good end: cheapest, quickest, easiest, highest impact. Priority is Impact squared, divided by what it costs you in energy, money and time.
How sure we are
Kept separate from the priority score on purpose: confidence in the evidence never raises how worth-it something is.
What we read
- Detox diets for toxin elimination and weight management: a critical review of the evidence
Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics · 2015
To the authors' knowledge, no randomized controlled trial has tested a commercial detox diet in humans; the few clinical reports are small and flawed, and most supporting food studies are in animals.
- Detoxes and Cleanses
National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health · 2019
The NIH's complementary-health agency states there is little evidence that detox diets remove toxins, and some programs can cause dehydration, electrolyte problems, and missing needed nutrients.

Where this falls down
Not for everyone. Juice fasts and laxative 'cleanses' are a bad idea for anyone with kidney disease, an eating-disorder history, or who takes medications that need food.
Still unknown. The liver and kidneys already clear what the body can clear; no cleanse has identified a specific toxin it removes in a well-controlled human study.
