    • All the wellbeing evidence is correlational — no one has run an RCT handing people emergency funds. The life-satisfaction link is modest (r ≈ .21; the first ~£1,000 is worth about 2 points on a 20-point scale) and flattens fast above sufficiency — this is a floor, not a ladder, and piling up cash past a few months of expenses buys little extra.
    • It also requires income margin: the 13% of US adults who can't cover $400 by any means can't simply choose this card, and they're the group the hardship data says it would help most.

    Where the evidence is thin
    • The guaranteed part is the money; the health part is probable, not proven. The 3x mental-disorder association is largely cross-sectional and runs both ways — poor mental health also causes debt.
    • The one causal-ish study (anxiety 78%→53%) was charity-funded debt relief for low-income Singaporeans, not self-directed paydown. Physical effects in cohort data are modest: ~1 mmHg diastolic blood pressure, ~12-13% higher stress and depressive-symptom scores.

    Where the evidence is thin
    • The behavior change is as well-proven as anything in behavioral science; the health payoff is inferred, not measured. No RCT ties automated saving to blood pressure, sleep, or lifespan — the chain runs automation → cushion → less money stress → less chronic-stress load, and the health-facing links are correlational (the depression review could not even pool an effect size).
    • The famous 13-IQ-point scarcity finding has contested replications. Automation removes willpower from saving; it does not fix low income, and it needs enough monthly surplus that the transfer never triggers overdrafts.

    • Almost all the outcome evidence is observational: people who cook most of their meals also differ in income, time, and conscientiousness, and the 28%-lower-overweight and diet-quality numbers are cross-sectional snapshots.
    • The only true RCT (n=20, 2 weeks) tested ultra-processed vs unprocessed food, not cooking itself. The prospective effect on diabetes is real but modest — 14% relative risk reduction over decades, not a transformation.
