Where this falls down
Not for everyone. Anyone photosensitive, on photosensitising medication, or with an eye condition should ask a clinician first.
Most trials use light boxes or measured lux, not 'go outside', so the dose you actually get varies with weather, season and latitude.
The '10–20 minutes' is a practical extrapolation from the phase-response curve's shape, not a measured protocol — the studies measure illuminance and timing, never minutes outside. Overcast days honestly need longer.
Effects on sleep timing are well supported; broader claims about mood and metabolism are thinner.
The hospital findings are natural experiments, not trials: nobody was randomised to a sunny room, so brighter rooms may differ in other ways. They point the same direction as the trial evidence rather than proving it.
Still unknown. How much of the benefit is light specifically versus being outdoors, moving, and away from screens.
